Special Education School in Germany Installs SMART Board Interactive Whiteboards

Students with severe learning difficulties benefit from use of technology products in the classroom

New Orleans, LA – June 23, 2004 – SMART Technologies Inc. announces the installation of SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards at Stephen Hawking School in Neckargemünd, Germany. A private school primarily for children with physical disabilities and belonging to the SRH Group, Stephen Hawking School has more than 600 students in kindergarten to grade 12. The installation is part of the school’s ongoing effort to use technology products in classrooms to boost student learning and engagement.

Stephen Hawking School installed its first SMART Board interactive whiteboard in 2002 and has been adding more to its classrooms as a result of increasing demand from teachers. The school now has 19 SMART Board interactive whiteboards. Teachers in classrooms equipped with a SMART Board interactive whiteboard use them to teach lessons in every subject and e-mail lesson notes to students who are unable to take notes in class because of their disability. Archived lesson notes are also available online to students preparing for tests. The ability to enrich their interactive whiteboard lessons with screen captures from websites has helped teachers add visually engaging content to their lectures, enabling them to improve student interest. Teachers extensively use the product’s image gallery which contains page templates and related pictures grouped by subject area, to build lessons as they teach in their classrooms.

"For us, the SMART Board interactive whiteboard is a quantum leap forward in teaching," says Manfred Treiber, technology coordinator, Stephen Hawking School. "We now have a tool that enables us to communicate our challenging content very effectively. Our teachers are integrating SMART Board interactive whiteboards into their lessons and report the positive impact this has had on student enthusiasm and outcomes."

"The Stephen Hawking School employs a number of advanced learning strategies and assistive technology to provide the most successful education environment for its students," says Nancy Knowlton, SMART's president and co-CEO. "The SMART Board interactive whiteboard can support this school's learning strategies, and the same features that made it the number one choice of educators worldwide will help these students achieve positive learning outcomes despite their learning difficulties."
